Firefox is a pretty awesome browser. I not only use it exclusively to surf the web but also some of its features come in pretty handy when you develop web apps. There's an abundance of extensions and themes available for it. However, some of this stuff can get pretty overwhelming and tweaking it for your own benefit can be a little imposing to the non-techie. This guide could come in pretty handy if you're trying to personalize all those Firefox tabs.

This one is not for kids or those who are offended easily. So if you click on the link - don't blame me !!. If you're in the market for a t-shirt that expresses your innermost feelings ( even when they're not very acceptable ), here's the site for you.

Beer education 101. The college class that every student seems to major in at one time or another. Speaking of beer, we've all had those moments in time when all there is is warm beer. Warm beer is enough to gag a maggot as far as I'm concerned. Fortunately, there's an easy way to chill warm beer in under five minutes.

Newsmap is a site that visually maps news from the Google news aggregator. It's pretty interesting how the news is displayed. From their about page:

Newsmap does not pretend to replace the googlenews aggregator. Its objective is to simply demonstrate visually the relationships between data and the unseen patterns in news media. It is not thought to display an unbiased view of the news; on the contrary, it is thought to ironically accentuate the bias of it.
If you're anything like me, age has taken a bit of a toll and perhaps you're getting a little wider around the midsection. I've been thinking about the easiest way to work in some time to get in a little exercise. Thankfully someone's come up with 101 ways to lose weight quickly.

Last on the list today . . . You can't help but laugh at these misplaced or unfortunately timed ads.

Admittedly, I have not tried using it yet so I don't have a whole bunch of details for you. However, this plugin is supposed to show the lyrics for whatever song is playing in either Winamp or Windows Media Player. Pretty cool, huh? Once I try using it I may write it up in a short post.

The Internet offers so much to each and every one of us. From those in ivory towers to those who are easily distracted with small, shiny objects. Have some fun playing with this text to speech generator.

First off, allow me to correct myself. Yesterday I said I would be doing "LinkTos" and I compared them to "Blog Drive-Bys". My mistake . . . actually these are just going to be links to pretty much anything I find and decide to post here.

They may very well be blogs, but they may be other things that I find and want to share with anyone who visits or reads. So I am going to, more appropriately name them, "Things I found" until ( or if ) I come up with something else.

Writing the "excused absence" note

|
As a parent of two kids over the years I've had to write several notes for the kids to take to school. Sometimes, if I can, I'll just call the school. Eventually, however, some kind of note will have to be written. Usually, and almost without fail, I get reminded in the five minute window between the time I'm scrambling to get everything I need to take with me in the morning and the time we actually head out the door. So, you can imagine that I don't proofread the notes. I just scribble something on a scrap of paper. I can only hope that the end result that is read by someone at the school doesn't find my scribblings as illegible or stupid as the one's I found today. A few hilarious examples:

  • Please exkuce lisa for being absent she was sick and i had her shot.
  • Carlos was absent yesterday because he was playing football. He was hurt in the growing part.
  • Please excuse pedro from being absent yesterday. He had (diahre, dyrea, direathe), the sh**s. [note: words in ( )'s were crossed out] .
  • Sally won't be in school a week from friday. We have to attend her funeral.
  • Gloria was absent yesterday as she was having a gangover.
Laugh till it hurts.

How's your driving?

|
I scored 90% on this driving test. I haven't taken one of these in quite a while. So, I must admit I was a little surprised to find that I scored as well as I did. Also surprising, the state in which I live ( Kansas ) scored 8th in the nation for Most Knowledgeable Drivers. If you live in Oregon give yourself a pat on the back. You came in #1. If you live in Rhode Island, well, sorry to tell you that you came in last. This fact and others can be found here.

How Machiavellian are you?

|
While at Digg I came across this test.

"This survey itself measures only one thing -- whether you subscribe to the ideas of a 16th century Italian political philosopher." "High Machs constitute a distinct type: charming, confident and glib, but also arrogant, calculating and cynical, prone to manipulate and exploit. True low Machs, however, can be kind of dependent, submissive and socially inept."
I scored a 71. Go figure?

Is this interesting

|
I found something new ( to me anyway ) at Flickr via BoingBoing - Interestingness. From Flickr:

There are lots of things that make a photo 'interesting' (or not) in the Flickr. Where the clickthroughs are coming from; who comments on it and when; who marks it as a favorite; its tags and many more things which are constantly changing. Interestingness changes over time, as more and more fantastic photos and stories are added to Flickr.
Just browsing the photos it is no surprise that these photos are deemed, "interesting." There are some really great photos. Have fun with it.

Reflectoporn

|
This story via Snopes. The story on Snopes suggests that these were not accidental images caught in the reflection. Evidently there was a group of people "accidentally" revealing themselves. My only question. Why couldn't it have been a hot chick?

Can you tell if someone is lying?

|
If you are like me, you tend to trust until someone deceives you or lets you down in some untrustworthy way. Over the years I have become a little less trusting and a little more suspicious of people, but still - how do you know when some one is lying? Is it the tell-tale darting of the eyes, the wringing of the hands, or is it the obviously, impromptu tall tale? Here is a good read about how to tell when someone is lying. Some highlights:

  • Physical expression will be limited and stiff, with few arm and hand movements. Hand, arm and leg movement are toward their own body the liar takes up less space.
  • Timing and duration of emotional gestures and emotions are off a normal pace. The display of emotion is delayed, stays longer than it would naturally, then stops suddenly.
  • Expressions are limited to mouth movements when someone is faking emotions (like happy, surprised, sad, awe, )instead of the whole face. For example; when someone smiles naturally their whole face is involved: jaw/cheek movement, eyes and forehead push down, etc.
  • A liar will use your words to make an answer to a question. When asked, "Did you eat the last cookie?" The liar answers, "No, I did not eat the last cookie."
I like the disclaimer at the tope of the page. The author notes that, "ignorance is bliss," and suggests that your feelings may get hurt after you have read the article and can then tell when someone is lying to you. Irregardless, it is a pretty good read.

The National ID

|
The debate over a national ID has stirred up a lot of controversy. There are supporters on both sides of the fence. Personally, I am still sitting on the fence and trying to weigh both sides of the argument.

Gaming is good for you?

|
There is no shortage of news reports, articles, or journals contending that gaming is bad for you. So much so that I am not even going to try to find links to them in an effort to make this blog even-sided.

However, lately there have been quite a few findings that suggest gaming may be quite good for you. By good this means it may improve your health, visual skills, intelligence and be quite an effective training tool.

Go here to read the original report at Techdirt. Now I won't feel quite so guilty when I play Halo 2.
