NBC Monday

|

I love this time of the year because it's great for giving me content for my site. I caught the premiers last night on NBC for Chuck, Heroes and Journeyman. I'm already a dedicated Heroes fan and I'm always looking for new shows to record since I'm home intermittently through the evenings. So, here's my thoughts about the premiers last night. I must admit, Chuck has a bit of an endearing quality about the show. The main character, Chuck, an underachieving Stanford grad, played by Zachary Levi, is sent an email that contains sensitive, government intelligence encoded in images. After reading the email the information is contained in his brain and only seems to seep out from time to time. Governmental agencies, such as the CIA and the NSA, are hot on the trail of the data and track it down to Chuck, the lowly fix-it geek at a local big-box, discount knock-off of Best Buy or Circuit City. For the time being, Chuck will be babysat by two agents: John Casey ( Adam Baldwin ) and Sarah Walker ( Yvonne Strahovski ). I only got to watch Chuck in bits and pieces. From what I did get to see, it seems like the type of show that I could easily enjoy. The "unlikely hero" storyline has so many possibilities that it should make for interesting plotlines. My only criticism, and I chose to do this sparingly since I haven't watched the entire episode yet, is that I hope Chuck will grow rather than being a stereotypical, shy and reserved, underachieving caricature. I imagine this will happen, but once it does will the show jump the shark? We'll see what happens. Luckily I recorded it so I can watch the whole episode, uninterrupted, later this week.

Heroes came out the gate this year and ended the premier as it usually does - with plenty of new questions and cliffhangers compelling us to watch next week. There's a few new characters as the primary ones are getting on with their lives. Claire's family tries to pick up the pieces and start their lives in a new place. Of course, Claire being a teenager, has a hard time doing this without calling attention to herself. Meanwhile, her dad plots to bring down the company with Mohinder's help while he lays down the law at his new job. Hiro has a new quest in ancient japan. The whole deal going on with Nathan and Peter has me stumped as to what's going on. Two new characters, a brother and sister from Mexico, are on their way to New York to get help. Evidently the sister, Maya, has some incredible power that is exceptionally deadly. I think this season of Heroes is going to be a good one.

Originally, I was a little skeptical of Journeyman. I'm still kind of sitting on the fence as to whether it will stick around or not. I like the whole idea behind the story. Kevin McKidd stars as Dan Vasser, a San Francisco reporter who begins to mysteriously travel through time. Yes. It just happens. It's as if some kind of portal opens up and only swallows him, transporting him to various points in time. It seems he has to set things right before he can break free from the force that keeps transporting him. Of course this plays havoc with his real life because in this story, when he goes back to 1987, for example, he's gone for nearly two days in his real life. This leaves a lot of explaining to do since he previously had problems with substance abuse. But that's what makes this character so cool. He's flawed. He's not some super-cool, techno-geek that builds a time machine and travels by choice. It's another flawed, yet endearing, unlikely hero here to save the day.

The new season of Heroes

|
The new season started last night. If you watched you already know that there's new stuff and old stuff alike that will keep this season going strong.

I've decided I don't want to do a re-hash of each episode each week, so you won't see me revealing any spoilers. Now, I may pick a certain something that is happening and ponder the possibilities. For example, I'm not really sure why the writers decided to throw Niki in jail?

What's the point of that?

I understand it from Niki's point of view, but I don't understand it from the story's point of view.

Got any suggestions?

Heroes ends the season

If there were questions about how far Claire's ( the cheerleader ) dad ( HRG ) would go to protect his daughter last night's episode should have put those to rest once and for all.

HRG ( Jack Coleman ) has Sylar ( Zachary Quinto ) in a special cell. Apparently, and probably due to the Haitian's ( Jimmy Jean-Louis ) proximity, Sylar has no power against HRG. HRG basically tells Sylar that he will stop at nothing to protect his daughter from Sylar.

However, Eden, the Whispering Girl ( Nora Zehetner ), doesn't have the Haitian around when she decides that she should suggest to Sylar he put a bullet in his brain. Sylar gets a hold of her through his cell window and she may very well have ended her life to keep Sylar from getting her ability before he most likely escaped.

Later, Claire and her dad have a brief discussion regarding her ability. He lets her know that he has always known. He just wanted her to have a normal life. Knowing that Claire and her brother ( Randall Bentley ) and her friend ( Thomas Dekker ) are the only other people that know of her talents, dad tells her to get a hold of any tapes recording her abilities. She does. She meets up with her friend and she destroys the tapes. After going home to find her brother she discovers that he has somehow lost his memory . . . and later her best friend has also lost his . . . and when the Haitian mysteriously appears from nowhere with Claire in his clutches he lets her know that he has wiped their memories just as he has several times before in the past.

Picking up from the episode two weeks ago, we now know that Niki/Jessica wasn't successful in her attempt to off DL and get Micah. The three are briefly reunited only until Niki decides it would be best for everyone concerned if she turns herself in to the local law enforcment agency.

Hiro knows he wasn't able to save the love of his life - Charlie, the waitress with the incredible growing memory and matching brain tumor ( Jayma Mays ). But knowing that his quest must change, he and Ando seek out Isaac. Isaac now realizes that he doesn't have to be high to paint.

The telepathic cop and Peter Petrelli run into each other since the cop and the fbi agent ( Clea DuVall ) are investigating the incident at Claire's high school. After the cop discovers that Peter is special too the cop and the fbi agent begin putting more of the pieces of the puzzle together. There is a scene near the end of the episode that suggests Peter is going to blow up. Has he somehow gotten a hold of radioactive guy's ( Matthew John Armstrong ) ability? Is he the bomb? That was the last episode of this season. It appears to be re-starting Jan 1 ( according to the website ). I'll be tuning in. Will you?

Saving the cheerleader a bit over-hyped

"Save the cheerleader, Save the world," was the resounding message preceeding last night's episode of Heroes.

But, in all honesty, I gotta admit that I felt the hype left me feeling let down. I can only walk away scratching my head and wondering if there was something more to the episode. My reasoning is quite simple. I expected a much more climactic ending when the cheerleader was to be saved. I expected that Hiro, as well as many of the others would be there using their combined powers. Certainly there are questions needing answers:

  1. Will Peter go down for the murder of Claire's cheerleading nemesis?
  2. Is DL out of the picture?
  3. What's up with Hiro?
  4. How will Claire coming clean with daddy change things?
  5. Now that Mohinder has decided that he will continue his father's research, what's his next move?
  6. What are they gonna do with Sylar?
  7. Did the cheerleader actually get "saved"?
I'm sure there's more so feel free to add your's to the list. The next episode is supposed to turn the clock back a bit and reveal some of the reasons that these people have such extraordinary powers.

Who's your favorite Hero?

|
After watching last night's episode of Heroes I can say, without hesitation, that my favorite Hero is Hiro.

It's probably a little too early to make judgements about all the character's on the show, but I have made a decision and I'm going to stick with it. If you wonder why, as I'm sure some people will, he's my favorite you'll be pleasantly surprised because I'm going to list a few of the reasons.

What I'm watching this fall

|
It's been a while since my last post of any real substance.

Recently, as you may or may not know, I was looking into the shows that would make up the fall season. I kicked it off with my own review of Men in Trees. I admit, I wasn't able to review as many of the new ( or even existing ) series. If this was my day job perhaps that would have been possible. I thought I would give it a try and predict the shows that would last and the one's that wouldn't.

Well, things are turning out as I expected ( or at least kind of ).

Somebody send me some Heroes

Monday night I caught the pilot of Heroes. I have some mixed feelings about this series, however.

This isn't to say that I thought the pilot was a waste of time that could have been better spent trimming my toenails. I guess my apprehension is this . . . last fall there were three series that I really liked...
