DVD of the week - Idiocracy

Something new - something different . . .

Since I really don't want to make this place of mine specific to any single topic, but yet, I want any loyal visitors to be able to rely on me doing something regularly. And as you may know . . . regularity is something us old folks really favor. I get DVDs from a service called DVD Avenue. They're a great service and they rent movies from all genres ( including adult ) as well as games ( Playstation, Xbox ).

I think their rates are very competitive and have no complaints about turnaround times between movie return and getting a new one in the mail. They work just like Netflix. Since I have this stream of movies coming and going I thought it would make for a great opportunity for regular posts in the form of movie reviews. Some of the movies you might have heard of - or seen - but I'm going to do it just the same. With that said . . . on to the first review of Idiocracy . . .
Right off the bat I must admit that I thought this movie was . . . hilarious, entertaining, and perhaps a glimpse into the future that, fortunately enough, I won't be around for.

Luke Wilson stars in the movie as Joe Bauers, an underachieving member of the military. His job is to sit on his ass, watch TV and, well, "guard" a warehouse full of archives which no one ever visits. He is selected to be part of a secret, military experiment by virtue of the fact that he is excellent at what he does - pretty much nothing. After a short and feeble attempt to resist being part of the experiment and actually doing something with his life he agrees to participate.

A co-participant in the experiment is Maya Rudolph as Rita. Rita is a hooker whose main priority is getting away from her pimp, Upgrade. The experiment is supposed to freeze Joe and Rita for one year and then bring them back to their former state. However, as most military experiments on TV, this one goes shelved and forgotten for about 1000 years. Joe and Rita are brought back in a world vastly different from the one they remember.

In this brave, new world survival of the fittest has essentially taken a backward step where people with the lowest IQs have been able to succeed at a higher rate and perpetuate the species. In this world where water is only used in toilets, gatorade-like beverages flow from water fountains and are used to water crops, the most popular show on TV is, "Ow!! My Balls!!"

After taking an IQ test while imprisoned, Joe is found to be the smartest person on the planet and he is brought to the White House where President Camacho, Terry Crews, appoints Joe as the guy to solve all their problems. Since all the crops are failing because the electrolytes cause the crops to fail, Joe decides to put water on the crops. Of course no one 1000 years in the future would have the audacity to suggest putting toilet water on the crops. But it is eventually done and Joe becomes a hero who also rises to the title of President.

While Idiocracy isn't as great as the movie, Office Space, it is certainly worth watching for any fan of Mike Judge's work including Beavis and Butthead and King of the Hill. Fans of slapstick comedy will find the majority of the movie a riot since the plot is not overwhelming in it's complexity and enough to captivate the viewer.

I thought this movie was great too. Got it on netfix and have been telling everyone it's a modern cautionary tale of what will be if we don't step up to the plate and take the world back from the rude, ignorant and just plain dumb.

I didnt really like the movie, sort of boring and bad humor
